About Hope’s Door

Hope's Door is a shelter and counseling center that offers comprehensive programs and services that are designed to help break the cycle of domestic abuse. Hope's Door provides direct intervention and prevention services to Texas families affected by domestic abuse in Collin County, Dallas County, and surrounding areas.  Hope's Door is a registered 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization, and a partner of the United Way.

When Hope's Door first opened its doors in 1986, the agency operated a 24-hour crisis line, but did not have the space to provide shelter. Clients were housed at local hotels. In 1989, the agency opened its own shelter and began providing temporary housing to victims of domestic abuse. Since 1989, Hope's Door has provided safe shelter for over 6,000 women and their children, and answered over 30,000 crisis line calls.

We asked Kelly Vaughan, Director of Development for Hope’s Door Inc., to share a heartwarming story with us.

“Dawn came to our shelter in the middle of the night with fresh bruises and two small children.  She had her handbag with her and the kids were in their PJs.  She told us she was terrified of her abuser and that he had threatened to kill her and the kids if she tried to leave, but she just couldn't take it anymore.  She was so afraid that her son would follow in his father's footsteps.  Dawn stayed with us in the shelter for three weeks.  Our legal advocate was able to help her obtain a protective order and gain custody of her kids in the subsequent divorce.  After leaving the shelter, she graduated into our transitional housing program, where she and her kids lived in a safe apartment for two years.  During that time, Dawn found a job as a secretary and went back to school to get her associate's degree in business.  She now is living in her own home and has her degree and has been promoted twice in the last year.  We are so proud of her and her commitment to make sure the cycle of violence stops with her.”

“Please let your newsletter readers know that it is only because of their support for Hope's Door that Dawn's success is possible.”

The WAM Bunco Charity Night will be held at the McKinney Chamber Office Building from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  The first 30 minutes will be a “learn to play” session.  The game will start at 5:30 and you must be present at that time to play.  Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.
