The 2013 Business & Education Breakfast will be held Wednesday, Aug. 14 at McKinney Boyd High School, located at 600 N. Lake Forest Dr.

The Chamber’s 2012 Business and Education Breakfast Welcomed More Than 215 New Teachers, Recognized Their Valuable Role
More than 215 new McKinney ISD teachers – including eight who graduated from the district – received a superheroes’ welcome to the 2012-2013 school year during the McKinney Chamber’s annual Business and Education Breakfast on Aug. 15, 2012. It was sponsored by Medical Center of McKinney.
On hand to welcome the new teachers were more than 500 McKinney ISD faculty members, Chamber members and city leaders. Chamber President Jodi Ann LaFreniere kicked off the event by recognizing and praising the community’s strong commitment to education.
Keynote speaker Curtis Rippee, President of the McKinney ISD Board of Trustees, noted that the new teachers were about to “embark on a great journey” because no other profession has the opportunity to make a greater impact on society than teachers.
Quoting author and motivational speaker Simon Sinek, Rippee asked the teachers to, “inspire people to do the things that inspire them” and to never lose sight of the valuable impact they make.
Dr. J.D. Kennedy, Superintendent of McKinney ISD, recognized the more than 215 new teachers, pointing out that eight were graduates of McKinney ISD. He explained that the district takes pride in growing its own great teachers with the Ready-Set-Teach program.
Kennedy also noted that McKinney ISD provides quality education and sets high standards, which leads to numerous graduates’ success stories each year. Ten National Merit finalists graduated in 2012 as well as one Presidential Scholar. There were only two Presidential Scholars in Texas and 140 across the country.
The superintendent introduced Karen Morman as Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year, District 10. Morman is also a national representative of McKinney schools.
She compared teachers to superheroes, saying teachers “work tirelessly” and “discover what motivates.” Morman encouraged the new teachers to “be the teacher that makes a difference in students’ lives.”
The event’s presenting sponsor, Medical Center of McKinney, has developed partnerships throughout the community for more than 90 years. The hospital pays more than $1 million in taxes to McKinney ISD, and officials said that is just the start of Medical Center of McKinney’s support of education. The hospital’s other initiatives include hosting more than 100 health occupation high school students to shadow staff, and contributing scholarships to the McKinney Education Foundation.
LaFreniere said she was thrilled at the success of the event, proud that the McKinney community is so committed to educational excellence and happy the Chamber could help start the new school year off on a positive note.
“Having an excellent school district is so important for McKinney to be able to attract new businesses, support the community with an educated workforce and provide great future leaders to sustain the community,” she said. “Great teachers are vital to making a great school district, and we are very fortunate to have so many wonderful teachers in McKinney."
